| Viewpoint Tour | Uhlandshöhe, Teehaus, Fernsehturm | You’ve always wanted to have Stuttgart at your feet? Then this tour over the most beautiful viewpoints in Stuttgart’s south-east is just the thing for you. From all three locations, you have a unique view of the city center of your (new) home. The ruin on the Uhlandshöhe is a great spot for chill evenings with a view, the Teehaus with its café invites you to linger with culinary delights in good weather, and you can go up high on the viewing platform of the Fernsehturm. Decide for yourself in which order you want to visit the places. A good starting and ending point is the main train station Arnulf-Klett-Platz. | Forest Walk | Bärenschlössle, Schloss Solitude and Birkenkopf | If you like to go for a walk on Sundays, this route is just right for you. The Pfaffenwald directly borders the university campus, hiding the Bärenseen and the Bärenschlössle. A charming place to have a coffee. If you walk a bit further, you’ll leave Stuttgart behind and reach Schloss Solitude. The former aristocratic residence in the Rococo style is always worth a visit, and the view is breathtaking. History and architecture enthusiasts will definitely get their money’s worth on a guided tour. For those who want a bit more distance on the route, here’s a tip: the shortest path isn’t always the most beautiful. And between Bärenseen and Schloss Solitude, a detour to the Birkenkopf viewpoint is also possible. Enjoy your time in the forest and nature, don’t rush, and if at the end of the day the way back is too long for your feet, the direct express bus from Gerlingen Schillerhöhe goes back to the university (X60, direction Airport/Messe). | Hiking Tour | Grabkapelle | The sporty ones among you might want to go on a short hiking tour on Sunday. The first destination should be the Grabkapelle on the Württemberg. Here too, there is a fantastic view of the city. How to continue from there is up to you. Possible further destinations: the Kappelberg, the Egelseer Heide, the Kernenturm and the Esslinger Burg. Pick something and plan a route yourself. A good starting point for the hike is the S-Bahn station Untertürkheim. | (Animal) City Center | Schlossgarten, S21 and Wilhelma | To experience Stuttgart’s city center, a day tour through the city is ideal. Germany’s most famous train station could be the starting point. On platform 16, there is an exhibition about the Stuttgart 21 railway project. Directly adjacent is the Schlossgarten, the largest green space in the city center, which is perfect for picnicking and relaxing. The Schlossgarten also connects the city center with the Bad Cannstatt district in a pedestrian-friendly way. There, right at the edge of the park, is the Wilhelma, Stuttgart’s zoo and botanical garden. It offers breathtaking animal and plant species to admire, but also the opportunity to make yourself comfortable on a lawn. Dear first-year students,
In the table you will find some suggestions on how you can spend your Sunday. Since the week is already very full, we wanted to give you some freedom here, but we also know that many of you are not from Stuttgart and therefore feel a bit helpless when planning. Apart from these four tours, there are numerous other destinations in Stuttgart and the surrounding area. To name a few examples: Ludwigsburg Palace, the mineral baths in Bad Cannstatt, as well as numerous museums and art exhibitions. Decide for yourself and find out what you feel like doing. Our idea is that you spend the day together with your newly found fellow students. So form small groups and see if you want to undertake one of the suggested excursions. Or do something your own way. Here are a few general things about excursions in the city:
On weekends, students can use public transport for free with their student ID. To do so, you need a printed current semester sticker (available in the C@mpus system under “My Study & Performance Certificates” -> ECUS Marke) and the free Studiticket from VVS (Link). Those who have already purchased the full semester ticket in advance have no problems with public transport anyway.
Otherwise, please check for all events, guided tours, etc. whether you need to reserve in advance, register online, or what the Corona regulations are. This applies especially to the suggested destinations and activities in the table. And book everything in good time – you are not the only ones going on an excursion on Sunday.
