Basic and Specialized Internship

In the B.Sc. Aerospace Engineering program, two internships must be completed:

• Basic Internship

• Specialized Internship

A report must be written for each of these internships.

Basic Internship

Important: If you started your studies before the winter semester 2019, different regulations apply to you. More detailed information can be found at the Internship Office or here

The 6-week basic internship is intended to provide initial practical experience at the start of your studies. If possible, it should be completed before the start of the program, but must be proven no later than the beginning of the lecture period of the 3rd semester. The six weeks are divided into work:

• at the bench vise

• on lathes, drilling machines, planers, milling machines, and grinders

• in the forge, hardening shop, and/or welding shop

• in the field of primary forming or forming technology (foundry, fiber composite materials, …)

You must cover at least 3 of the 4 areas, but you may spend a maximum of 2 weeks in any one area.

If the basic internship is not completed before the start of studies, students can still participate in exams as usual, but must make up the internship during the following semesters, which can certainly lead to time constraints.

It is recommended to start searching for an internship position as early as possible, approximately 6 months in advance. Nevertheless, it is also possible to find a spot at short notice.

As a rule, most large companies such as Bosch, Daimler, Mahle, Porsche, etc. offer the opportunity to complete the basic internship there. In general, you can go to any metalworking company. Foundries should be approached separately, as the “large” companies usually no longer have a foundry. However, smaller (specialized) companies often offer opportunities here as well.

We especially recommend that you also inquire at small locksmith shops.

Specialized Internship

The specialized internship lasts at least 12 weeks and gives students insight into the variety of operational processes and career prospects in industry. The focus can be chosen relatively freely.

It is typically planned for the 6th semester before the bachelor thesis and can be completed at companies in the private sector or at large research institutions. NEW: All students under the 2025 examination regulations may also complete the specialized internship at a university institute.

Applications for the specialized internship should begin one semester in advance to allow enough time to contact companies and wait for a response.
