The Path to a Successful Start at University

On this page, we would like to give you some tips for starting your studies. From deciding to study Aerospace Engineering to the application and the first steps in Stuttgart.

Undecided?! A visit to the University of Stuttgart can be worthwhile

In addition to the official information days of the university (Uni-Tag in mid-November and Day of Science at the end of June), it can be helpful for undecided students to attend a lecture or two on a trial basis. Simply contact us and we can find suitable lectures for your day at the university.

Pre-Internship

We strongly recommend completing the pre-internship before starting your studies. The requirements of the internship are met by most local metalworking companies, and they are usually very happy to have interns. As always, asking doesn’t cost anything. Just call the companies, write an email, or drop by. Further information can possibly be found on the page of the Internship Office.

Application

The Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering starts each winter semester. You should note the application deadline (July 15) and submit any certificates, proofs, etc. as soon as possible if they are not included with your application. For questions about your application, the ZSB (Central Student Office) is there for you. There is also a YouTube video that explains how to apply to the University of Stuttgart.

Finding Housing in Stuttgart

As in any university city, it is important to take care of a room/apartment early. For dormitory rooms (managed by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart or the VSSW), you should apply 6 months in advance. The ‘party dorms’ on the Vaihingen campus are Straussäcker 1 and 2. The private housing market can be significantly more expensive. Remember that almost all events take place on the Vaihingen campus and not in the city center.

Are the Preliminary Courses Worth It?

We recommend the preliminary courses to all students. Even if you just got your Abitur with a very good grade, the preliminary courses can definitely be worthwhile. The learning pace at the university is much higher than in school, and the mathematics preliminary course greatly eases the transition into the math lecture. It lasts 3 weeks. You can also take the 1-week physics preliminary course, but most of the school material is reviewed in the first semester. Registration is done online. Additionally, the MINT-Kolleg offers an Online Bridge Course in Mathematics.

Cost Estimate

The costs are of course different for everyone. For a rough planning, we have summarized the fixed costs per semester here:

€184.00 semester fee
Books: All books required for the lectures are provided free of charge as PDF, only the books for the mathematics lecture must be purchased. Some students also use additional literature besides the provided books.

Rent:
approx. €300-400 per month for a dormitory room; for a shared apartment room or your own apartment you may need to budget more.

Do you want to get to know your fellow students?

Most people probably feared at the beginning of their studies that they wouldn’t find friends. You don’t need to worry about that; there are 250 other students in your year who feel the same way. So here are a few tips on how to meet people:

Create a social media group so you can exchange ideas long before the start of studies and explore Stuttgart together.
Participate in the First Semester Introduction Week (ESE).
As the student council, we also offer a First Semester Weekend (EWOK) where you can get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere.
Join student groups, stuvus, or the student council and get to know your studies from a different perspective.
if you attend preliminary courses, use them as a platform to meet new people
And of course, you can simply approach your fellow students openly and friendly.
